Help searching for a name
Search Names Listed on Memorials
The War Memorials Register names database shows where and how people were remembered. Our records are not biographies, but can help you to discover the locations and contexts in which someone was commemorated, offering leads for further research.
You will find that a single person may be listed multiple times, with their name described in different ways, especially if they are commemorated in several places.
How to find a name
- Start your search with a broad search for a name
- Narrow your search results by then using the filters supplied.
- In your search results, click on a record to open it and see whether it matches the information you are looking for
Advice
- Change how broad your search is. If your results don't seem relevant enough, use the filters to refine your search. The location, war and service filters will help to narrow down results.
- Keyword searches will return matches across all fields of a name record. For example, a search for "Morley" will return instances where Morley is a person's first or last name and people who are commemorated on memorials in Morley, Yorkshire.
What to do if you can't find a name
Despite being the most comprehensive record of UK war memorials, the War Memorials Register is constantly being updated and there are gaps in the information available.
If you are unable to find the information you’re looking for, there’s a good chance no one has contributed information about it yet.
You can help us by sending information or photographs of your local war memorials.
