Description: Base surmounted by dedicatory tablet. Outline of the Spitfire carved to the right of the inscription; outline of a tail fin carved onto the base There is also a silhouette of a Spitfire on the ground at the shoreside near Mitchell Close (SU 43513 11169)
Inscription: In memory of the designer of the legendary fighter aircraft the Spitfire/ REGINALD JOSEPH MITCHELL 1895 1937 / On this site the first Spitfire was built by the Supermarine Aviation / Works (Vickers) Limited. Spitfires and their pilots played a decisive / part in the Battle of Britain 1940. This plaque was unveiled by / MR ALAN CLIFTON M.B.E. B.SC. F.R.A.ES.
