    • Herts and Cambs Recorder and Royston Crow Friday 4/4/1890 reported: 'CHRISHALL. In Memoriam. —The ceremony of unveiling the memorial, in the shape of a new reredos in the parish church, lately erected under a faculty from the Lord Bishop of the Diocese to the memory of the late Captain C. H. H. Beley, of the Bengal Staff Corps, who was killed in the Black Mountain Expedition, on the 5th of October, 1888, was performed by the Hon. and Rev. Canon Latimer Neville. M.A. (rural dean of Saffron Walden) at the usual Lenten evening service on Friday last. The late Captain Beley was both a brave and noble officer, and was held in high esteem and respect by all who knew him, as the words of General Galbraith, written after the action, show. He said : "I feel it impossible to express my sorrow in having to announce to the troops the death of Captain Beley, D.A.Q., M.G.. from wounds received in action. The service cannot boast of a more gifted man and gallant officer. His death wounds were received as became a British soldier, singly, but fearlessly facing a host of foes, and bearing a noble example to his comrades." —After the third collect, at the request of the Vicar, who presented the faculty, the Rural Dean uncovered the memorial and the dedicating service proceeded. The Rural Dean preached the sermon, taking for his text the 13th chap. of the first Epistle to the Corinthians, and the 12th verse:—“ Now I know in part, but then shall I know even as also I am known.” The congregation was a good one and all seemed much interested in the service'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001795/18900404/087/0005
    • Chelmsford Chronicle 12/10/1888 reported: 'Captain Beley, the only son of the Rev. C. A. E. Beley, vicar of Chrishall, and late vicar of Manningtree, was killed in the first engagement of the Black Mountain expedition. The Times, in an obituary notice, states that Captain Beley was born in July, 1855, and obtained his first commission as sub-lieutenant in the Royal Scots Regiment in February, 1874. For his services in the Afghan campaign he received a medal with two clasps and the bronze star. He also accompanied the Burmese Expedition in 1886 - 87, and was again mentioned in the despatches which appeared in the London Gazette on September 2,1887. For his services in the latter expedition he was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order on July 1, 1887. A very impressive funeral service was held at Manningtree church on Tuesday evening. It was conducted by the Rev. C. F. Norman, assisted the Revs. H. W. Jukes and J. M. Gatrill'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000322/18881012/035/0008
