    • Retford and Worksop Herald (page 2) reported on 13/12/1921: 'These and Countless Thousands. CLARBOROUGH MEMORIAL UNVEILED. At the unveiling recently of the war memorial tablet in Clarborough Parish Church, the ceremony, which was attended by the ex-Service men of the district, was a touching one. The service was conducted by the Vicar of Clarborough (Rev. E. A. Paxton), assisted by the Rev. R. Jones, Vicar o f Hayton. The memorial was unveiled by Mr. J. A. H. Hirst, J.P., who in the course of an eloquent and moving address, said they were assembled to honour those men from and connected with Clarborough who gave their lives in the Great War. It was the heroism of our men which won the war. It was these men and countless thousands of men who had gone through the task, and had given their lives. It was their duty, and they did it. This memorial did not mark their resting place - their bodies lay on foreign soil. The tablet spoke of the greatest sacrifice they made, and their memory was enshrined in the hearts of those who loved them. These men sowed; we reaped. Might the harvest be worthy of the sowing. Mr. Hirst read the names on the tablet and the inscription :—John William Briggs, William John Cobb, Charles Gant, John Hatch, John William Stevenson, Alfred Welton. "These men of Clarborough gave their lives for the honour and freedom of their country, and all lands, in the Great War, 1914 - 1918. Let their memory and example ever live in the hearts of their grateful countrymen." In conclusion, Mr. Hirst said: "May we and those who follow us, ever be worthy of those who gave their all." On behalf of the parish, Mr. Hirst placed a very beautiful wreath near the memorial, which was dedicated by the Vicar of Clarborough, who said that something had been done in their village which ought to be done; to perpetuate the honoured memory of our heroes, by placing a permanent memorial in the fine old church which for more than 600 years had seen the vicissitudes of English history. The "Last Post" and "Reveille" were sounded by Mr. Geo. Ledger, of the Retford Brass Band. Several wreaths were placed under the memorial from relatives of the fallen. The Clarborough memorial consists of a tablet of solid white marble with black letters. On the top of the tablet is a beautifully carved sword and scabbard, and a galliard in the centre. It is a fine example of the work of Messrs. Sharpe and Hoggard, of Retford, who have designed and erected so many memorials in the district'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0003353/19211213/017/0002
