Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Cross
WMR Reference Number: 27420
Description: Tall cross on traceried octagonal base and stepped octagonal pedestal with inscribed tablet. On either side is a tapering flight of steps, at the head of which is a pair of gates. Flanking the steps are splayed walls with moulded coping and square pedestals with square iron lanterns. Inset tablets bear the names of parishes, towns and villages in the city and county. The county tablets are either side of the memorial cross, facing the street, while the city panel is on the reverse of the memorial cross, facing the churchyard. On the gate pillars are raised tablets with the names of men and women from St MaryÃ¢s parish who died in the First World.
Inscription: IN PACE/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN THANKFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF ALL WHO FROM THE CITY AND COUNTY/ GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918/ NOTTINGHAM AND NOTTINGHAMSHIRE / DEDICATE THIS CROSS/ (List of Parishes with the number of the fallen)/ (Names only refer to St Marys Parish)
