    • Western Mail - Friday 14 September 1945 Their Motto Was "The Goods" .... At one time during their captivity the men of the 77th made a roll of honour, carved from jungle timber. The church in which it hung was demolished, but the roll was later found and restored. Col. Humphries tcld me it had been decided to ask the Bishop of Llandaff Cathedral to accept it, and it is hoped that it will find a place in the cathedral. ETERNAL RIGHT As Col. Humphries finished telling me the tragic story of the 77th he brought from a tin box under the bed of his tiny room a wooden crest. It bore the colours of the R.A, surmounted by a leek; and below, the motto Betoel.” That crest, which is the regiment's proud possession, was the result of a competition for a suitable emblem. The man who won it was GUNNER HOLDS WORTH. That one word Betoel.’’ now regarded out here as the motto of the 77th, Malay for "The Goods.” If I may add a personal word at the end of this attempt to tell something of the regiment’s story, it is this: Never was there a more apt motto. By their courage, bearing, their fortitude, the 77th have earned the right to regard themselves eternally as The Goods.”
