  • Kentish Express - Thursday 17 April 1997 Page 7 THE LAST WORD VETERAN Ashford councillor Gordon Turner has solved three mysteries I left lurking in the column. ’ He remembers the ornamental stags that lived on the fountain in Victoria Park. Ashfordian Terry Dickinson called asking for information. Gordon says: "l‘here were only two stags and they were taken at the beginning of the Second World War along with the old howitzer gun that lived by the gates at Christchurch Road. I used to sit on that gun. “The stags were clad in lead and they later turned up outside garden sheds at Hillyfields. They stayed there until 1949 when they finally disappeared." Gordon has also traced the missing engine from Ashford’s First World War tank. Apparently most town’s had one in recognition war bond savings. Ashford’s tank arrived in 1926 and it was immediately gutted to house an electricity sub station. In 1965 the electricity board built a new sub station so the ‘gubbins’ were removed and the tank soldiers on as an Ashford landmark. It is one of only three First World War tanks in the United Kingdom. The other two being at the Royal Tank Corps Museum in Dorset. ---
