Sutherland Memorial Park was given to the Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of the Borough of Guildford as Trustees, by the Duke of Sutherland (who lived at nearby Sutton Place) in 1954, to provide a Public Recreation Ground and Playing Field as a War Memorial to the residents of Burpham near Guildford in the County of Surrey who were killed during the late war. The deed goes on to explain that the expression 'residents of Burpham' would mean and include the persons from time to time residing within the boundary for the time being of the ecclesiastical parish of Burpham-cum-Sutton. There appears to be no mention in the deed of how many men were killed.
