    • Dundee Evening Telegraph, Tuesday 8th December 1914 (page 1) reported: 'FORFARSHIRE MAN KILLED. Returns to Trenches for Curios. Sympathy is being expressed in Carnoustie for the wife and children of Sergeant William Doig, of the 1st Black Watch, who has been killed in action. Sergeant Doig, who is a son of Sergeant Doig, of the Forfar Town Constabulary, was a reservist, and for a few years had resided with his wife in Burnbank, where he was a police constable. The story of his death is told by another Highlander who has been sent home wounded, and is of an exceptionally sad nature. Doig, who had been in action since the beginning of the war, was wounded on 2d November [sic]. He was advised to retire to the base hospital. This he did not at first do, but the pain of his wound at last compelled him to do so. When a little distance from the firing line he remembered that he had some battlefield curios in his haversack which he had left in the trenches. Being unwilling to lose them, he retraced his steps. Immediately he again set foot in the trenches a shell burst overhead, death being instantaneous. His wife well known in Carnoustie, and is at present staying, along with her four children, with relatives in the Forfarshire burgh'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000563/19141208/006/0001
