    Description
    Large (floor to ceiling) triangular-topped bronze plaque, flanked by columns (each topped by an urn) of an elaborately-carved wooden backboard with a triangular tympanum. The plaque's inscription is in two sections; the upper one listing employees who died; the lower one listing employees who survived their war service and were decorated for gallantry. (The names in both sections are in three columns; all of the inscriptions are in white lettering). The memorial is fronted by a shallow semi-circular wooden platform, surrounded by short wooden posts with a rope between each of them. Between the two central posts is a small curved plaque/board, inscribed with details of the memorial's unveiling.

    Maintenance History
    2026: A planning application (submitted in 2025) re the redevelopment of the premises is still under consultation. (IWM understands that a suitable location will be found in which to display the WW2 memorial). 2022: 'Avant Homes' bought the Hudson Road premises./ 2021: The Arcadia Group went into administration. (The former Montague Burton Ltd premises in Hudson Road, Leeds closed)./ 2002: Philip Green bought the company, which became part of the Arcadia Group (which also included Dorothy Perkins and Debenhams).

    • Yorkshire Evening Post - Thursday 18 March 1948 (page 6) reported:  PLAQUE UNVEILED.  Tribute to Leeds war victims.  LORD MOYNIHAN, O.B.E., to-day unveiled a bronze plaque in the main hall of the Montague Burton offices at Hudson Road Mills, Leeds, to commemorate employees of the firm killed in the war.  The plaque contains 279 names, plus the names of 45 [sic] employees who have received gallantry awards.  Ald. George Brett, Lord Mayor of Leeds, presided and the plaque was dedicated by Canon A. S. Reeve, Vicar of Leeds, and the Rev. E. Kahan.  Lord Moynihan said that statesmanship and Gandhi's great influence had averted chaos at the Indian hand-over.
