    Description
    Cenotaph with domed roof and cross on a four tiered plinth. The body of the cenotaph is constructed of grey marble with an inset red marble text panel on each face. All lettering is in gold. The front face commemorates the First and Second World Wars. Moving clockwise, face 2 commemorates the Korean War, face 3 Afghanistan and face 4 the Falklands.

    Face 1:- 1914 - 1919 // TO THE MEN / OF / BISHOP AUCKLAND / WHO FOUGHT AND / FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR. // THEIR FELLOW CITIZENS HAVE ERECTED THIS MEMORIAL //// 1939 1945 / IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO IN A LATER GENERATION / MADE THE SAME SACRIFICE / AS THOSE TO WHOM THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED. Face 2:- "GREATER LOVE HATH / NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY DOWN / HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS" / ST JOHN XV.13. ///// 1950 1953 / IN REMEMBERANCE OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE KOREAN WAR. Face 3:- "GOD MADE TRIAL OF / THEM AND FOUND / THEM WORTHY / OF HIMSELF." / WISDOM III.5. //// 2001 2014 / IN MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE AFGHANISTAN CONFLICT.
