- Description
- A formal garden with flower beds between the street and the walled memorial area, at the entrance of which are two low pillars. An image from 2000 shows a plaque on each pillar, but by 2012 only the one on the right-hand pillar appears in the image. The area behind the low brick wall is triangular with a flagpole at its apex, with a brass memorial plaque mounted on a sloping concrete backboard on a stone plinth carrying the Dedication, which is in white enamel. The commemorations are inscribed in white on individual laminated black plastic plaques and are mounted on the pillars and walls of an area to the right of the triangle. The commemorations are a mixture of war dead and of those who served and returned from both World Wars. Details of service are given below the names. One plaque carries a commemoration from a survivor of the sinking of HMS Exeter in the Far East in WW2, with a reference to crew who died as Japanese prisoners of war. This commemoration also appears on one of the tablets in the replacement Garden, but lacks the context.
