Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Roll of honour or book of remembrance
WMR Reference Number: 113360
Description: Previously a wall mounted, framed and glazed, portrait orientated, hand-drawn Roll of Honour (see last paragraph). The heavy wood frame had a straight pediment with carved decorative borders and flat scroll panels at the top and bottom sides (now discarded). The roll of honour has a green floral decorative border outlined in yellow, with English roses at the bottom 2 corners, and depictions of a Distinguished Service Order, Victoria Cross and a Military Cross in laurel wreaths at top centre and both corners. The dedicatory inscription is at the top, above and below nine coloured hanging flags of the Allies. Beneath in a thin black line border, are the names, and then a further dedication. At bottom centre of the names border, there is a set of R.A.F. wings within laurel leaves, and a stanza from a poem by Tennyson. Note: After a torrential downpour and rain ingress through the roof, the Roll of Honour was found to be badly damaged. The Vicar's husband removed it to the Vicarage and dried it out. The frame was warped, mouldy and disintegrating so it was removed and discarded. The Roll of Honour appears to be in a good condition and is currently held, unframed, in the Vicarage.

RODGERS/ IN MEMORY OF THEIR BELOVED SON/ JOSEPH EDWARD RODGERS/ RE DRAWN BY RAY SHAW 30.10.22/ NOT ONCE OR TWICE IN OUR ROUGH ISLAND-STORY/ THE PATH OF DUTY WAS THE PATH TO GLORY. Tennyson.
