- Description
- Two associated wall-mounted marble tablets. Large rectangular black marble tablet, with an ornately carved beige marble border, fixed to the stepped-top of which is the enamelled Coat of Arms of Ipswich. The black tablet bears the WW1 inscription in incised gilt lettering. Fixed to the wall immediately beneath is the rectangular black marble tablet, bearing the WW2 inscription in incised gilt lettering, with a simple white marble border.

- Bury Free Press - Saturday 15 October 1927 (page 3); report re the visit of HRH Prince Henry to Ipswich on 7th October mentioned re the memorial: 'SUFFOLK ROYAL VISIT. The Gainsborough Exhibition. Prince Henry, the third son of the King, visited Ipswich and opened the exhibition of paintings by Gainsborough in celebration of that artist’s bi-centenary. The exhibition is the most complete collection of Gainsborough’s pictures ever brought together, their estimated value approaching £1,000,000. Sir Frank Dicksee, President of the Royal Academy, delivered an appreciation of Gainsborough’s work, and Prince Henry extolled his English personality. En route to Ipswich and in the town the Prince received the warmest greetings and there was a generous display of flags and bunting. After a drive through Christchurch Park the Prince was entertained to luncheon at the Town Hall. In the afternoon he visited Bourne Park, where he received the title deeds from Ald. W. F. Paul and handed them to the Mayor. He also planted an oak tree. Returning to the Town Hall he unveiled a memorial to Corporation employees who gave their lives in the Great War.
