Type of Memorial: Obelisk
WMR Reference Number: 1158
Description: Obelisk on tapering shaft flanked by two stone walls bearing names plaques. Whole stands on five stepped base in shallow paved area. Dedicatory inscription incised on sunken panel on the front of the plinth. Laurel wreath raised in bas relief at top front of the obelisk.
Inscription: 1914 + 1919 + 1939 + 1945/ IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THE MEN OF THIS TOWN/ WHO AT THEIR COUNTRY'S/ CALL LEFT ALL THAT WAS/ DEAR TO THEM TO HAZARD/ THEIR LIVES THAT OTHERS/ MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE/ THINE O LORD IS THE VICTORY E M ARE EX INDUSTRIA/ (Names)

Maintenance History: 2008: Memorial was cleaned by power-washing in August. In September, work was begun on levelling the paving, improving drainage and repairing cabling under the memorial so that it could be illuminated again. Work is to take seven weeks. C 1992: WHOLE AREA WAS RENOVATED
