    Description
An illuminated Roll of Honour in a glazed frame. The printed Roll depicts a stone arch, each of whose tapered columns are topped by a capital with a lions head. The laurel wreaths above the cornice contain a photo of soldiers at the Dardanelles (on the left) and a photo of HMS Dreadnought (on the right). At the foot of each of the arch's columns are the initials 'NSR'. The lower border of the Roll includes three tableaux, which depict (from left to right) a red railway carriage; several soldiers on a battlefield; a red loco engine and coal tender. In the Roll's central panel, the nine columns of the company's employees who enlisted in the Armed Forces are grouped by the railway department in which they worked. The upper section of the the Roll of Honour's design is similar to the front entrance of Stoke Railway Station, and incorporates the Royal Arms on a Union Jack background; the Staffordshire Knot; the flags of the Allies, and the floral nationals emblems of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland (the thistle, rose, leek and shamrock). [N.B. This is one of numerous replicas of the Roll of Honour, copies of which were displayed in the Company's stations etc; reproductions of it were also sent to the family of each man who had enlisted. The Roll is primarily a record of employees who had enlisted by 1916, and bears no annotations re any of them who had died, but some are known to have done so. An earlier version, bearing fewer names and of different design, is known to have been created. Details of the final version, created after the War, bearing the names of 1423 employees who enlisted, are in our record WMR 116688]. ALL NAMES ON WMR #51133

    • The Staffordshire Sentinel published the following report on 5/11/1915 (page 3) re the Company's compilation of a Roll of Honour: 'N.S. RAILWAY ROLL OF HONOUR. Messrs. Sherwin and Co., printers and lithographic artists, Hanley, are about completing a roll of honour to the order of the North Staffordshire Railway Company. The roll already contains the names of 625 men from the various departments of the company who have joined the colours, and 50 more have still to be added. As may be imagined the roll is a very elaborate affair. With its oaken frame, its width is 46 inches, and depth 55 inches. The names are lettered on a large parchment scroll, in nine columns [sic], being arranged in departmental order. The lettering is sufficiently large to enable the names to be read comfortably some feet from the frame. The scroll is itself enclosed in a design upon an architectural basis, elaborately carried out in colours. Supporting the scroll is imitation stone work, flanked with marble columns. The columns carry a reproduction of the upper frontal part of Stoke railway station, almost hidden by profuse decorative work. The supporting marble columns are entwined with oak leaf and oak apples in autumn tints and gold. Worked into the principal stonework carrying the pillars are the North Staffordshire Railway coat of arms and the arms of the County Borough of Stoke-on-Trent. In the centre base panels are illustrations of the very latest engine and carriages turned out by the local railway company. Carriages and engine are painted in maroon colour, and they move in a very engaging landscape. Two medallions in the upper architectural work show what is believed to be the first photograph of men in action at the Dardanelles, and a photograph of the Dreadnought Iron Duke. These medallions are surrounded by laurel wreaths and flags of the Allies. The centre top panel contains a highly finished emblazonment of the Royal Arms on a Union Jack background. The Staffordshire Knot, the flags of the Allies, the thistle, the rose, the leek, and the shamrock are all worked into the general scheme. The headlines to the names, also done by hand and in colours, are EUROPEAN WAR, 1914 - 19-- ROLL OF HONOUR. EMPLOYEES OF THE NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE RAILWAY COMPANY. This roll, which does the local firm great credit, is perhaps the most elaborate affair of its kind turned out in North Staffordshire. Its probable destination is the Board Room of the company, on whose instructions it has been designed and carried out. Messrs. Sherwin are preparing a smaller reproduction of the roll, it is understood, for distribution among the families who have fathers or sons enrolled'.
