    Description
    Cenotaph with a seated woman at the north and south faces, one symbolizing the sorrow and despair of 1914, and the other the hopeful triumph of 1918. Originally the sculpture of a lion holding down an eagle with its paws stood atop the memorial, but it was removed was removed for exhibition and was not replaced.

    Maintenance History
    Statue removed in 1940, and reinstated in 1951, but removed again when the whole was dismantled in May 1968. After structural concerns it was then separated, with the lion and eagle statue placed on a new plain plinth in the new location (WMR Ref: 1170) and the original plinth moved to St Mary's Church. Signs of lichen c1999. Cenotaph cleaned in November 1999.
