    Description
Large ornately sculpted memorial, comprising 1220 names in black metal lettering on white marble panels, surmounted by a broken segmental pediment, the tympanum of which contains the coloured crest of the Great Eastern Railway within a wreath of laurel leaves, flanked by sheaves of flowers and leaves. At the centre of frieze above the names panels is a white marble panel, bearing the dedicatory inscription. It is flanked on each side by three black marble panels, at the centre of which is rosette, in high-relief. The names panels are flanked on each side by fluted Roman Doric columns, with a spiralling carved wreath of laurel leaves. At the foot of the columns, the white marble pedestal incorporates five recessed panels of black marble, the central one inscribed with the dates 1914-1919. Since being moved to its current location in the 1990s, the WW1 memorial is fixed above a large five-panelled white marble base, inset with four plain black marble panels. Fixed to the centre of the base is a relief-cast bronze portrait of Captain Charles Fryatt, which flanked on its right by a marble-clad lift door, and on its left by a relief-cast portrait of Field Marshall Sir Henry William Bart. [The large stone panel, carved 'GREAT EASTERN RAILWAY' in high-relief, which is fixed to the wall about a metre above this memorial, is a separate entity; it was moved to its present location following the demolition of Harwich House].
