    Description
Drum pedestal supporting a three-sided column around which are three free-standing servicemen (air force, army and navy) mother & baby surmounting the memorial. On the west side is a plaque commemorating the Liverpool escort force of WW2. Steps lead up to the memorial. Around the drum are 12 bronze plaques with raised inscriptions for WW1. Those who died in WW2 and later conflicts are on bronze plaques and lead lettered inscriptions on the original stone boundary plinth and around the steps leading up to the memorial. The group of heroic bronze figures represents the motherland and the future generations of the British Empire jealously guarded by the three great fighting forces, which kept our homes inviolate during the four terrible years of the greatest war. Also included in the memorial area is the 2016 centenary VC memorial stone for Private Arthur Procter of the Kings Liverpool Regiment, whose VC action was on 4th June 1916 Below the memorial, on the west side, there is also a modern early 21st century interpretation board.

    Maintenance History
2018-Listing upgraded from Grade II to Grade II*; 1994: Plan to add names for additional conflicts. Graffiti is on name tablets next to the steps; 2016-War Memorials Trust grant of £86,660 to steam clean to improve legibility of inscriptions, repoint construction joints with lime mortar, and stone indent repairs. The approach steps and base were lifted and relaid to the original design on new foundations and lead letters were repaired, also the bronze was cleaned, repaired where needed and protective wax applied, also smartwater applied. The central panel on each of the two WW2 bronze plaques is hard to read- the layout of these plaques encourages skate boarding and the like-it is asssumed that it is this kind of activity which has worn them down. On the day of the visit adverse weather was not assisting readability, it would be interesting in better conditions to see if some of the names and/or regiments are totally illegible, which was the impression gained on site visit day.
