- Description
- A carved York stone cross presented to each of the four faces, surmounting a battered pillar which bears a carving of a wreath beneath the legend, Pro Patria, set upon a plinth bearing the main dedication. The plinth is set on two steps which are set on a pavement raised by two steps above ground level. The names are inscribed on granite tablets on a curved wall behind the cross.
A 1920s image (see Images) appears to show that the original Great War inscription was carved directly on the plinth, but a granite tablet commemorating the dead of both World Wars has been superimposed on it. A further granite dedicatory tablet is set on the step in front of the plinth. Similarly, the 1920s image shows that the original WW1 inscriptions were carved directly onto the stone of the wall, and granite tablets have since been superimposed on them.
To the left of the WW2 tablets has been added a tablet to record later deaths, which presently bears the name of an Afghanistan Conflict casualty. To the right of the WW2 tablets there is a tablet initially installed to record the death of a man Shot at Dawn, to which a further six WW1 names have been added.
The inscriptions are painted black.
