- Description
- A walled garden and, within it, the large ashlar stone screen on a tall plinth and base. The screen, which stands at the eastern-end of the garden, is of the English Renaissance design. Its central, taller section is edged by two Ionic pilasters and is topped by a triangular pediment whose tympanum contains a carved scallop shell and leaves. Beneath is a semi-circular shell-headed niche, containing a white Portland-stone statue of St George, holding a shield and metal staff, standing on the slain dragon. Flanking that niche are panels adorned with a relief-carved lion's head, beneath which the years from 1914 to 1919 are interspersed by inverted bouquets. The screen's left and right sections each have a relief-carved laurel wreath topped by a crown: the end-piers have an urn-shaped pinnacle. Beneath, the WW1 and WW2 inscriptions, all in incised, gilt lettering, are on Westmorland slate tablets, fixed to the screen's plinth and base (in two banks of three, WW1 above WW2). The screen has a low surround of black wrought-iron-railings, with red-enamelled poppies attached: a small boulder close to (but separate from) the memorial screen, with a carved depiction of a beret with Royal Artillery cap badge, appears to have been added in recent years. The 'Garden of Remembrance' in which the screen stands is on the north-west bank of the Minster Pool and has lawns and flower beds. Its other three sides are bounded by 18th Century, red-brick walls and 19th Century stone balustrades. At the entrance from Bird Street are a pair of wrought iron gates, each of whose brick pillars is topped by a carved stone lion, holding a shield bearing the Lichfield Borough crest (Chequey of nine Or a Chevron Gules and Ermine). Fixed to the roadside face of the south pillar is an inscribed stone tablet.
[N.B. This record relates to the screen bearing WW1 and WW2 names and 'Garden of Remembrance' on the north bank of the Minster Pool. Details of the separate WW2 'Remembrance Garden' on the south bank are in our record WMR/ 112329].
