Belper News, Friday 31 December 1926, page 6; reported the unveiling, the opening paragraphs of which read:
'THE HONOURED DEAD. Memorial Unveiled at Stanton-in-the-Peak. The inhabitants of Stanton-in-Peak and district gathered in prayer and solemn thought at the little Square by the Parish Church last week, when the Cross, which has been erected by Mrs. McCreagh Thornhill, .of Stanton Hall, to be a memorial to those men of the parish who fell in the Great War, was unveiled by the Marquess of Hartington, M.P., and dedicated by the Bishop of Southwell. . The memorial, built by Messrs. W. Dakin and Sons, of Matlock, in gritstone taken from the Stanton estate quarries at Birchover, is of extremely neat design, set back in the wall at the corner of the Square practically facing the Chureh. It is a Celtic Cross set on a pedestal standing on a circular base, around which is the inscription: “ln everlasting memory of the men of Stanton who gave their lives for us, 1914-1918.” The whole stands upon a rough semi-circular basement, backed against the boundary wall, to which there are four stone steps leading up from the road. Round the top of the basement are inscribed the following names of the fallen:—Lieut.-Col. B. G. Davie, 8th London Regt.; Sapper Herbert Evans, R.E.; Pte. James W, Gladwin, Sherwood Foresters; Pte. Harold Harvey, Sherwood Foresters; Pte. John W. Holmes, Cheshire Regt.; Pte. Charles Penistone, Infantry Works Coy.; Pte. John B. Siddall, Machine Gun Corps; A.B. Arthur Whitworth, R.N.V.R.; Pte. John R. Stevenson, Sherwood Foresters. The unveiling was attended by many of the inhabitants of the parish, including relatives of the fallen and about a score of local ex-Servicemen, who paraded in charge of Mr. Leonard Prince, the school children, who took up their places before the memorial, Mrs. McCreagh Thornhill, Mrs. Davie, Mr. Humphrey Davie, Mr. J. E. J. Davie, Mr. G. Moore Wilson (agent to the Stanton Estates, Ltd.), Mr. J. W. Vaughan (pastor of the Bakewell Wesleyan Reform Church), and the officiating clergy, the Lord Bishop, Canon Prior, R.D. (vicar of Rowsley), the Rev. L. W. Greenshields (vicar of Youlgreave), and Mr, William Brookes, J.P. Sheffield (Wesleyan Reform)...'
