Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Cross
WMR Reference Number: 14475
Description: A limestone wheel cross with tapered shaft on a battered limestone plinth with rounded upper arrises, on a three-stepped rectangular limestone base. Six o'clock face of cross has carved fleurs de lys on the arms, foliation at the head and a carved Crusader's sword. Twelve o'clock face of cross has a pelican feeding its young carved in the centre. Three and nine o'clock faces of cross have a carved lotus flower and foliation. An endless chain is carved on the wheel. On the side of the chain are laurel leaves, and at the base is a flame. Commemoration on the shaft of the cross and on the steps. Pink granite tablets on the four faces of the pedestal are incised with WW1 names in silvered upright capital block lettering. An inclined lower pink Balmoral granite tablet on stone backboard has incised WW2 inscription in gilded upright capital lettering. All set within a paved area surrounded by stone bollards supporting metal chain railings. Maker's name on lower step is illegible.
Inscription: 6 o'clock face of cross shaft: IN/ IMPERISHABLE/ MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF EYAM/ WHO MADE THE/ SUPREME SACRIFICE/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1919. 12 o'clock face of cross shaft: THEY WHOM/ THIS MONUMENT/ COMMEMORATES WERE/ NUMBERED AMONG/ THOSE WHO AT THE CALL/ OF KING AND COUNTRY,/ LEFT ALL THAT WAS/ DEAR TO THEM, ENDURED/ HARDNESS, FACED DANGER/ AND FINALLY PASSED OUT/ OF THE SIGHT OF MEN BY/ THE PATH OF DUTY AND/ SELF SACRIFICE, GIVING/ UP THEIR OWN LIVES/ THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE/ IN FREEDOM/ LET THOSE WHO COME/ AFTER SEE TO IT THAT/ THESE NAMES ARE NOT/ FORGOTTEN. 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock face of pedestal: (Names) 6 o'clock face of steps: THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.
