    • Belper News - Friday 27 July 1923 (page 3) reported: 'LONGSTONE'S TRIBUTE. WAR MEMORIAL ON VILLAGE GREEN. Although probably one of the last of the villages in the Bakewell district to erect a war memorial, Great Longstone has shown its appreciation of the noble services rendered by its soldiers who died on active service during the great war by erecting a Grecian pillar, 8 feet 6 inches high, on the Village Green, opposite the National Schools. A representative committee with Mr. A. W. J. Eyre as chairman, and Mr. J. Gratton Bown, hon. secretary, was formed some months ago and sufficient money was forthcoming to proceed with the scheme. The monument was unveiled on Sunday by the Duke of Devonshire, who was supported by several influential ladies and gentlemen in the neighbourhood. The public memorial stands practically in the centre of the village green and at some distance from the ancient village cross, taking, however, a very different form. It is a very handsome stone pedestal on three bases and carved cap, conventional in design. The first base is plain and solid. On the second base on three sides are the following inscriptions: - Front of monument: "Our glorious dead"; on the East side: *‘Their name liveth for evermore’: and on the West side: "Faithful unto death.” The third base, carved at the corners and with a shield to the front, with the word "Liberty"” carved in raised letters. Above this is the four-panelled pedestal and on the East and West sides are the names of the fallen. The whole is surmounted with a Maltese cross. On the North side and front is the following inscription: -*Erected in honoured memory of the men of Great Longstone who gave their all in the Great War, 1914 - 1919"; and on the South side: “Greater love hath no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends.” On the lower part of the carved cap are suitable panels, symbolical of the Great Sacrifice. The memorial is one of the many war memorials designed and carried out by Mr. J. W. Boden, sculptor, Matlock. The stone is white Stancliffe, beautifully finished. The cost of the memorial is about £150. The names of the fallen are: - East side: Herbert B. Dixon, Herbert Elliott, George Furniss, James Hewitt, Stanley Jeffcoat, Arthur Morton, Fred Morton; West Side: Harold Robinson, Robert Robinson, Fred Cowen Slack, Frank Suter, Arthur Ward, John Ward'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0001538/19230727/051/0003
