    Inscription
    EDWARD LAWRENCE SPRUNT (EXHIBITIONER, JESUS COLLEGE, OXFORD, 3RD YEAR) PRIVATE, FIRST BATTALION HONOURABLE ARTILLERY COMPANY (AUG 1914) STRETCHER BEARER SECTION, KILLED IN ACTION, 17TH JUNE 1915 AT THE BATTLE OF CHATEAU HOOGE-YPRES-MENIN, BELGIUM AND BURIED SOMEWHERE NEAR THE YPRES-MENIN ROAD, AGED 24. 'HE SAVED OTHERS, HIMSELF HE CANNOT SAVE'. "HE DISCHARGED HIS DUTIES WITH GREAT VALOUR, UNDER GREAT DANGER, THE CIRCUMSTANCES WERE SUCH AS TO LEAD ME TO SPECIALLY RECOMMEND HIS GALLANT CONDUCT" OFFICER COMMANDING, 1ST BATT, HAC "I AM TO EXPRESS TO YOU THE KING'S HIGH APPRECIATION OF THE SERVICES AND TO ADD THAT HIS MAJESTY TRUSTS THAT THEIR PUBLIC ACKNOWLEDGEMENT MAY BE OF SOME CONSOLATION IN YOUR BEREAVEMENT" ASSISTANT MILITARY SECRETARY.
