    Description
    Two-stepped base with square column-like pedestal surmounted by an unusual marble figure of an infantryman in mourning pose with head bowed & rifle reversed, the muzzle resting resting on top of his left boot (a precaution against dirt entering the barrel). Inscriptions on sides of column. The whole memorial is enclosed in a triangular, gated memorial garden, in the centre of the road (the former village green), further surrounded by a metal railing fence with gate.

    South face : TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE BURBAGE MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ 1914 - 1919/ (NAMES) GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT/ A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS East face : (NAMES) THE MEN NAMED ABOVE DIED LATER/ FROM THE EFFECTS OF THE WAR/ 1914 - 1918 North face : IN HONOURED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF BURBAGE/ WHO DIED WHERE DUTY CALLED/ 1939 - 1945/ (NAMES)

    CARVING SOFTENED BY WEATHERING AND SIGNS OF BIOLOGICAL GROWTH AND BLACK ENCRUSTATION. TIP OF NOSE, LIPS, CHIN AND EARS ALL FROST DAMAGED. THIS DESPITE REFURBISHMENT IN LATE 1999. In 1996 the memorial enclosure was replanted in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the British Legion and 10th anniversary of reconstituted Burbage Parish Council and in late 1999, there was a major refurbishment of both the memorial and its enclosure by the Parish Coucil with assistance from Leicester County Council's Department of Planning and Transportation
