Leicester Daily Post - Monday 29 November 1920 THE WOODHOUSE WAR MEMORIAL .... The first is that the memorial itself is made of local stone. It consists, our report tells us, of "a large cross of grey Mountsorrel granite." and "a few feet below is a massive stone of remembrance, also of granite, on the front of which are panels of Swithland slate." This is as it should be. Marble, Derbyshire limestone, or other stones, may make very good monuments, but on the Charnwood Forest they would be out of place. Granite and slate are the dominating notes of the local rock. Amongst granite and slate were the lives of the Woodhouse fallen spent, and so it is in granite and slate that their immortal fame should be recorded. We have not had the pleasure of beholding' the memorial, but the fact that it was designed by so tasteful a local architect as Mr. Howard H. Thompson, F.R.I.B.A., is for us sufficient guarantee that it is a worthy one. ....
