Memorial Details

WMR Reference Number: 14819
Description: Three-course red brick octagonal sectioned foundation supporting a single-stepped octagonal base surmounted by an octagonal skirted plinth & capping stone. Rising from the plinth is a second multi-sided plinth further surmounted by a moulded collar & stout eight concave-sided column almost elliptical in section, terminating with a pitched roof tabernacle. A leaded relief comprising Christ on the Cross flanked by standing figures of The Virgin Mary & St. John the Evangelist occupies the front recessed face of tabernacle. On the lower plinth faces, the inscription lettering overlaps in relief. Upper plinth inscription is also in relief but uniquely, the lettering folds around the corners of each face. In the Church two associated bronze plaques with sunflowers at the corner with names
Inscription: Upper plinth faces, continuous text : GRANT THEM O LORD ETERNAL REST Lower plinth faces, continuous overlapping text : IN GLORIOUS MEMORY OF ALL THOSE WHO FROM THIS TOWN GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND AND FOR US Lower plinth, front face : 1914 - 1918 In the Church: ROLL OF HONOUR/ (names) IN WHOSE MEMORY THE CROSS/ IN THE CHURCHYARD WAS/ ERECTED BY THEIR FELLOW/ TOWNSPEOPLE AND FREINDS
