    Description
Hall decorated with murals by Neville Lytton (this record), as well as a dedicatory wooden board (see record 97289) and a Roll of Honour on wooden panelling (see record 97290). The mural on the north wall, known as the 'Peace Wall', shows portraits of known people including: the artist playing the flute, his second wife holding a guitar, and their daughter; Lady Denman, wife of the owner of the Balcombe Estate and sponsor of the hall, working on plans for the building; and various estate workers and friends of Lytton and Lady Denman. The mural on the east wall shows scenes from the First World War, including a wounded soldier on a stretcher, broken trees and mine shafts, wounded German prisoners and British soldiers marching out of the picture. The mural on the east wall shows scenes emphasising the pain and misery of war. The stage is on the west side of the hall; to the south of this, i.e. in the south-west corner of the hall, is a mural showing a symbolic representation of sorrow (entitled 'Dolor'); and to the north of the stage, in the north-west corner of the hall, is a mural with a representation of hope (entitled 'Spes').

Reasons for listing from Historic England website: Architectural interest: * for the highly evocative murals within the main hall designed by the artist Neville Lynton depicting scenes based around the theme of War and Peace. * for its good quality 1920s remodelling. Historic interest: * for its association with the halls’ founder Lady Denman, a prominent national figure who helped found the National Federation of Women’s Institutes in 1916, and who worked closely with the architect John Bond in the building’s design.
