Knight who presided, said the whole of the £270 required to free the memorial from debt had been obtained. Major the Hon. Harold Pearsen had consented to unveil the memorial on Sunday, May 6th. The meeting drew up the ceremonial programme. and the local Territorials. Grammar School Cadet Corps, Boy Scouts, Fire Brigade, Friendly Societies, and all other local organisations will lie invited to take part. There was a discussion as to where the German gun, which is at present in a butcher's backyard, should be placed. The Chairman suggested on the plot of land south of the memorial. but Mr. A. Beresford objected, and said he spoke feelingly on the matter. He lived opposite, and when the gun was there before it was an unmitigated nuisance. After turning out time he had seen men going through their gun drill till twelve at night. All day long children were playing on it — Mr. W. Werry said there was also the feeling that the gun might have killed some of the Midhurst men. — No decision was arrived at, but the members generally favoured the Market :square. — On the proposal of the Vicar (the Rev. F. Mitchell) Mr. Knight was thanked for his work in organising the collection of the additional money required. The £270 had been obtained in three months. Mr. Knight acknowledging the help he received from many generous friends.

Erected opposite the west entrance of the Parish Church, the Memorial consists of a small cross on a tall pillar with a square base. On the north and south sides of the pillar are panels of Roman marble, bearing the names of the fallen, numbering 50. The cross is also of Roman marble. and above the panels are wreaths carved in the same kind of stone. The pillar and base are of local stone, and the steps of York stone. Around the base is the following inscription: ….
    • West Sussex Gazette - Thursday 11 December 1924 https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0002166/19241211/139/0008 (with an engraving of the memorial) Colonel Niamey, Church Hill, Midhurst, the artist, writes: "The Midhnrst War Memorial has, of course, been reproduced photographically on post cards &e., but I think a great many such photographs give a false idea of the perspective of the neighbouririg buildings and of their relative size to the memorial. In the foreground may be noticed part of a circle of large stones — these are believed (and I think rightly) to be the remains of the old bull-ring, for bull baiting and so were carefully left in their original position when the surround to the memorial was made."
