Newcastle Daily Chronicle - Monday 17 July 1922 (page 7) printed a lengthy report of the unveiling, which began: NORTHERN WAR MEMORIALS. Whitley Cenotaph Unveiled by the Duke: NEWBURN CEREMONY. Tribute to Men of Haworth Colliery. The Whitley Bay and Monkseaton Cenotaph, erected to the memory of the men of the district, who lost their lives in the war, was unveiled on Saturday by the Duke of Northumberland. The Cenotaph, which stands at the entrance to the Links, looking out over the North Sea, is built of granite and cost £1,750. It was designed by Messrs. Harrison, Ash and Blythe, architects, Newcastle. Thousands of residents and visitors attended the unveiling ceremonial. The Duke was received at the Spanish City by Mr. James Noble (chairman) and the members of the War Memorial Committee. A procession was there formed for the site of the memorial and was headed by the Vicar (the Rev. F. L. Cattell) At the Cenotaph. Marshalled around the Cenotaph were a detachment and firing party of the Northumber.land Hussars. under R.S.M. Hector. The band of the regiment, under Mr. J. B. Anderson, was also present. Three troops of the Whitley Bay Scouts, under District Scoutmaster Addiscott and Scoutmaster H. Baugh and W. Morgan Hall; and a party of Church Nursing Girls, commanded by Sergt. Violet Geddes, were lined up. There was also a full parade of the 2nd Cadet Shields Northumberland Fusiliers. under Cadet Major S. W. Fuidge and Staff Sergt. Major A. Patterson. Whitley Bay Guardian - Thursday 14 November 1996 (page 3) reported: 'New plaques on cenotaph. PLAQUES remembering Whitley Bay's war dead were in place on the cenotaph in time for Sunday’s Remembrance Service. Last year thieves added to the grief of families by stealing the Second World War name plates from the seafront cenotaph just days before the November service for the war dead. The new stainless steel plaques are on the north, south and west columns of the cenotaph and it is intended to replace the remaining alloy plaques in the coming months. The vice chairman of the Whitley Bay branch of the Royal British Legion, Mr Raymond Nugent, said: “The plaque which was on the east column at the bottom will not be replaced, as those names will be incorporated onto the new listings.” The vacant space will be used for a new plaque honouring those whose name was not included in the original plates and servicemen who have died in the service of their country since World War Two'.
