Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Cross
WMR Reference Number: 17803
Description: Grey granite Celtic cross with Celtic carvings around the crossing, on a tapered shaft mounted on a battered plinth on a two step base. The Dedication is on the 6 o'clock face on which is carved a laurel wreath. The WW1 deaths for Llangollen are inscribed on the 3 and 6 o'clock faces, while the 9 o'clock fee carries the Llantysilio Names for both World Wars. The Llangollen WW2 Names are inscribed on a separate tablet of similar materials which is set to the right of the cross against a retaining wall for a small garden. The tablet resembles the 6 o'clock face of the cross - bearing a carved laurel wreath alongside the inscription. The incised inscriptions are gilded.
Inscription: On the shaft of the cross: Erected/ in Grateful Memory of/ the Men of/ Llangollen/ and Llantysilio Parish/ who laid down their lives/ in the Great War. Dedication on 6 o'clock face: 1914 1918/ They whom this Memorial Commemorates/ were numbered among those who at the/ call of King and Country left all that/ was dear to them, suffered hardship,/ faced danger and finally passed out/ of the sight of men by the path of duty/ and self sacrifice giving up their own/ lives that others might live in freedom./ Let those who come after see to it/ that their names be not forgotten. On the step below: "Live thou for Britain/ We for Britain died." 9 o'clock face: Llantysilio Parish/ (Names)/ 1939 - 1945/ (Names) On the step below: "There is life in death." 3 o'clock face: Their name/ Liveth for evermore./ Llangollen./ (Names) On the step below: "Mewn anghof ni chant fod." 12 o'clock face: Llangollen/ (Names) Separate WW2 tablet: 1939 - 1945/ (Names) On the step below: "On to the Light that nevermore shall fade."
