    • Liverpool Daily Post - Monday 15 February 1999 (page 8) reported: Garden remembers insurance workers. INSURANCE workers from the North West who served in the armed forces are to be honoured in a special memorial garden. Twenty plaques commemorating soldiers from both world wars had been placed on Royal and Sun Alliance buildings nationwide. But employers decided to close some buildings after the giant insurance companies merged in 1996. Rather than remove the plaques to be simply stored away, the Royal and Sun Alliance plans to instal the bronze and marble tablets on the garden’s walls. The garden is to be built at the company’s training centre in Inglewood, near Ledsham, south Wirral. Royal and Sun Alliance is awaiting planning permission from Chester City Council, which covers the proposed site. It is hoped that the public could inspect the historic memorials at specific times. Martin Cruwys the company’s group archivist said more than 20 honorary plaques would come from the company’s buildings in Liverpool, Manchester and London. Lives. Currently they adorn grand entrance halls or stairway walls. “They record the fact that in these conflicts a number of Royal and Sun Alliance staff gave their lives as well as honouring the very large number of our men and women who served in local defence or the Home Guard or were seconded to the Government”. Mr Cruwys continued: “One can understand that relatives of the deceased from these conflicts do not wish, and neither would we, to see these memorials simply being stored away or discarded. In some cases war memorials are sold in antique shops But we intend to preserve and keep these memorials an appropriate way. We don’t want to build a hidden garden. We want to make it available for people to visit. It would be a constant reminder to our existing staff of the debt owed by us to their predecessors.” Councillors will discuss plans for the garden at their next meeting'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0005011/19990215/008/0008
