Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Cross
WMR Reference Number: 18685
Description: White marble gabled crucifix with curved supports emerging from a slim base which carries the dedication at its centre and the names to the sides. These are carried on slate tablets which have been secured over the original leaded inscriptions which were applied onto the face of the base. An additional marble tablet was placed at a slight angle in front of the base to carry the incised WW2 commemoration, but this has been covered with a blank slate tablet, and the WW2 names now appear on the right-hand tablet on the base. The enclosed area in which the memorial stands has been changed and extended, presumably when the new tablets were added and the memorial refurbished. Note 1: Two names were added to both the WW1 list (Kavanagh and Sherrington) and the WW2 list (Baldwin and Winter) on the new tablets. Note 2: A WW1 name appears on the new tablet as Peter William Winrow, but on the original inscription as John William Winrow - which is the name recorded for him on his family's grave in the churchyard (see WMR 112168).
