Description: LARGE WAYSIDE CROSS, ORIGINALLY AN ELBORATE CALVARY WITH HOOD AND FIGURE OF CHRIST CERAMIC WREATH ON FRONT FACE GATES AND FENCES ADDED ON ROADSIDE, LEFT HAND FENCE HAS A SILENT SOLDIER AND A PLAQUE, RIGHT HAND SIDE HAS A SILENT SOLDIER
Inscription: This wayside cross was erected in June 5th, 1917 by the Dominican Friars of Woodchester with the generous assistance of all classes and creeds from the district and ... in memory of those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom in the Great War 1914-1918 On the fence there is a green plaque with the commemoration: THIS WAYSIDE CROSS WAS THE FIRST PUBLIC / WAR MEMORIAL IN THE COUNTRY. / IT WAS BUILT IN 1916 & 1917 TO HONOUR / THE FALLEN OF THE STROUD VALLEYS / AND ALL PARTS OF THE EMPIRE, / IT WAS DEDICATED ON JUNE 3RD, 1917. / THERE ARE 140 NAMES ON THIS MEMORIAL. / ....
