    • Gloucestershire Chronicle - Saturday 02 April 1921 https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000393/19210402/112/0007 WAR MEMORIALS. MORETON-IN-MARSH Lord Redesdale on Saturday, in the presence of a very large company of the inhabitants, unveiled a war memorial erected by the townspeople of Moreton-in-the-Marsh and Batsford, situated in High Street of the former place. The memorial is in the form of a beautiful column built of stone, and on the four panels are inscribed the names of forty four residents who made the sacrifice. Among them is the name of Major the Hon. Clement Hitford, late 10th Hussars, brother of Lord Redesdale. An address was given by the Lord of the Manor, Lieut.-Colonel Sir Gilbert Wills, M.P., and the schoolchildren sang the hymns O God, our help in ages past,” "For all the Saints who from their labours rest," and Kipling's "Recessional.” The opening prayer was said by Rev. Williams (Congregational minister), and the dedication prayers were read by Revs. Spencer Jones (rector) and J, Williams. After the "Recessional,” the "Last Post” and "Reveille" were sounded, and the ceremony, which was dignified and striking, concluded with the National Anthem.

MORETON'S LOCAL AFFAIRS, Meeting of the Parish Council. The monthly meeting of Moreton-in-Marsh Parish Council was held on Tuesday Mr. Strong, Chairman of the subcommittee appointed to improve the war memorial at Moreton, said they proposed to make about an eight or ten feet, octagonal garden around the memorial with railing to keep people off it. The question that remained was one of finance. He suggested that the money collected for the purpose, and he had no doubt that it could be raised. It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the committee to report the next meeting the Council.
