Reasons for listing from Historic England website: Historic interest: * as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on the local community, and the sacrifice it made in the conflicts of the C20. Architectural interest: * the memorial was designed by the architect and antiquarian Percy Stone, whose career was devoted to the study and restoration of the island’s historic fabric; * for its imposing design, taking the form of a Celtic cross in Portland stone, with accomplished carving to the western face.
