Memorial Details

WMR Reference Number: 23720
Description: Originally erected in 1919, a timber-framed Lychgate, with a shingled roof on a flint base with stone coping and quoins erected at the entrance path to the church. The lychgate takes the form of a gabled arch with pentices to front and rear. For the exterior; the north-west side facing the street has a louvred gable with a central post and side tension braces, the left one inscribed with the date 1914, the right one 1918. The plain wooden barge boards have a carved finial and pendant. The corner posts have diagonal tension braces on wooden corbels. Placed on the lychgate is one bronze plaque related to the First World War and one bronze plaque related to the Second World War with a supplementary name plaque mounted on each side.
Inscription: First World War / WOODMANSTERNE MEMORIAL/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-18/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THIS/ PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING & COUNTRY/ (12 names)/ REQUIESCANT IN PACE Second World War / WOODMANSTERNE MEMORIAL/ THE SECOND GREAT WAR 1939-45/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING MEN OF THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ (18 names)
