Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Cross
WMR Reference Number: 25242
Description: 1) Memorial constructed of rough-hewn stone comprising a three-stepped rectangular base surmounted by a tapering rectangular sectioned plinth, tapering shaft and cross. Pinned-lead letters and numerals form the inscription and names on three smoothened plinth faces and a smoothened top step riser face. Adjacent to the memorial is a stone flower vase with a repeated WW2 name in pinned-lead lettering. The initials of the Fallen are reversed with respect to the name on the main memorial. Vase given by Bampton Home Guard. 2) In addition, in front of the main memorial is a rectangular ground tablet bearing the incised name of a VC recipient from the Great War. / The whole memorial array is mounted on a raised stone platform, being enclosed at the front by a metal post and chain fence and to the rear, a vertical railing fence.
Inscription: 6 o'clock plinth face: TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN SACRED MEMORY OF / FORTY ONE PARISHIONERS / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919. / GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN / THAN THAT HE GIVETH HIS LIFE / FOR HIS FRIENDS. / (12 NAMES) // 3 and 9 o'clock faces: (29 NAMES) // 6 o'clock top step riser face: 1939 - 1945 / (13 NAMES) // Ground tablet: FOR VALOUR / CAPTAIN / ANKETELL MONTRAY READ / NORTHAMPTONSHIRE REGIMENT / 25TH SEPTEMBER 1915 // Flower vase: IN MEMORY OF / KEN / L.A.C.
