Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Obelisk
WMR Reference Number: 26840
Description: A limestone obelisk that sits on square pedestal, a plinth and a two stepped base. The front face of the pedestal features a carved crossed rifle and sword, set upon a wreath and cap: the commemoration is carved above and below this design. The WW1 names are carved on the other three faces of pedestal, the WW2 on the face of the plinth and the top step on the 3 o'clock side: all are in black lettering.
Inscription: 6 o'clock face: ERECTED BY/ THE PARISHIONERS OF/ AWSWORTH/ IN/ PROUD, GRATEFUL, AND HONOURED/ MEMORY OF/ AWSWORTH MEN,/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR GOD, KING AND COUNTRY IN/ THE GREAT WAR,/ 1914 - 1919/ "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" 9 o'clock face of pedestal: (1918 Names) 12 o'clock face of pedestal: (1916 and 1917 Names) 3 o'clock face of pedestal: (1915 Names) 3 o'clock face of the plinth and the top step: (WW2 Names)
