WMR Reference Number: 29742
Description: Wall and corbel stone mounted, apex-headed alabaster frame supporting a dedicatory white marble tablet, below which is a battle scene depicting an Officer leading his men into action carved in half-relief. Inscription incised and infilled with black paint. Laurel wreath and war years in relief within the pediment. Captain MDW Maude is buried in the churchyard and Captain GWE Maude is commemorated on his headstone (WMR 71730). Captain Michael Maude is also commemorated on the Great War Memorial tablet in the church (WMR 29739), but Captain Gerald Maude is not, being a casualty of the 1919 3rd Afghan War.
Inscription: Pediment: 1914 / 1919 Tablet: TO THE PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF TWO BROTHERS / GERALD WILLIAM EDWARD MAUDE, / CAPT. 1ST. BATT. ALEXANDRA PRINCESS OF WALES' OWN [YORKS.] REGT. / WHO DIED AT PESHAWAR, INDIA, NOV. 5TH. 1919, OF WOUNDS / RECEIVED AT DAKKA IN AFGHANISTAN, AGED 30 YEARS, / AND ALSO OF / MICHAEL DAY WADE MAUDE, / CAPT. 3RD. BATT. ALEXANDRA PRINCESS OF WALES' OWN [YORKS.] REGT. / WHO DIED OF WOUNDS OCT. 14TH 1917. / RECEIVED AT INVERNESS COPSE, BELGIUM, AGED 27 YEARS. / "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
