    Description
Oval tablet, inscribed in incised black and red lettering, with an ornately-carved gilt frame that incorporates the Prince of Wales' feathers at its base. Within the Soldiers' Chapel are a glazed wooden frame containing a fragment of a White Ensign (made by the crew of H.M.S. Black Prince), and a glazed frame containing a photo of the ship and a handwritten card that explains flag's relevance. [N.B. For nearly a century, the White Ensign hung above the oval tablet, on the north wall of the Church. When the silk flag began to deteriorate, it was encased in a glazed frame to preserve it, and subsequently moved to the Soldiers' Chapel in the north transept where it now hangs, adjacent to the frame containing the photo of HMS Black Prince and handwritten card].

    • Evening Despatch, Friday 18 May 1917 (page 3); report headlined 'LADY JELLICOE IN BIRMINGHAM' included the paragraph: 'CEREMONY AT KNOWLE. To honour the memory of the heroes of the Black of the Black Prince, which was sunk during the Jutland Battle, Lady Jellicoe motored out to Knowle after the ceremony at the Town Hall. One of the old boys of the village school was a member of the crew of the Black Prince, so that the present scholars had a direct interest in the ship, to the crew of which they sent many little gifts. As a token of appreciation of these gifts the crew of the Black Prince made a beautiful silk flag for the children, and by a tragic coincidence this flag arrived at Knowle on the eve of the Jutland Battle, 30 May, 1916. To commemorate for all time the link between the children of Knowle and the Black Prince heroes, a stone tablet, encircled by an artistic gilt scroll, has been placed in the north wall of Knowle Parish Church. Above the tablet hangs the children’s flag, and on the tablet is inscribed the name of the village sailor - Frank Smitten, A.B. It was to unveil this tablet that Lady Jellicoe, in company with the Lady Mayoress of Birmingham (Mrs. A. D. Brooks) went out to Knowle. The ceremony was performed in the presence of a crowded congregation, which included the whole of the village schoolchildren'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000671/19170518/066/0003

Knowle Parish Magazine May 2016 includes a photograph of the flag in situ at the back of the church. As the flag deteriorated over the years, parts of it were framed and hung near the plaque'). https://solihulllife.org/2016/05/31/31st-may-1916/#more-1463
