    Description
    Tall obelisk made from grey Cornish granite, standing on a cement base. Bronze coat of arms of the Borough of Hyde on the 6 o'clock face above inscription on the obelisk. Two sets of railings surround the memorial: one surrounds the base and features eight red wreaths; the other encompasses the memorial area as a whole. The obelisk is part of 154 acres of land for recreation.

    £14013 14s 8d was raised from the citizens and a strip of land (valued at £500) was given: £4,000 was used to buy Lower Higham Estate, £2,000 for the memorial and the remainder was used for scholarships/grants (for 268 children of the fallen to receive £4 pa between the ages of 11-16 from the Children's Fund) and Asplands maternity home (opened 1 Oct 1931, closed 1973 & demolished- the pillars were moved to the entrance to Werneth Low and a commemorative plaque erected-see photograph). £200 was invested, the income from each would be devoted to provide a civic wreath to be placed on the Memorial on Peace Day every year, and also to maintain the Memorial in good condition. The names are listed on plaques in the Town Hall (Ref 3258), although there is a discrepancy in numbers.
