Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Lamp or lighting
WMR Reference Number: 33323
Description: Gas lamp surmounts a tapering sandstone column with a carved laurel wreath at its juncture with its square set pedestal. Cast bronze plaques on three sides of pedestal bear the names and inscription on raised lettering. The pedestal sits on a three-step base, which is set on a platform with a screen wall to the rear, with low terminal piers, within a raised area enclosed with tapered stone posts linked by chains, and approached by three angled steps. The memorial faces down Northumberland Street towards the village. To the rear of the memorial is a lawned area enclosed by railings. The inscriptions were originally inscribed on the pedestal, but were replaced with the plaques post-WW2. The plaque on the 6 o'clock face carries a dedication for both World Wars. The plaque for WW1 is on the 9 o'clock face, and carries the dates and names. The plaque on the 3 o'clock face carries the WW2 military casualties and eight names of civilian casualties including seven from November 8th 1941, killed in a German bombing raid on the village that night.
