Type of Memorial: Battlefield cross or marker
WMR Reference Number: 33440
Description: Truncated Battlefield Cross with four metal tags. The upper two tags show that the cross was erected by a Graves Registration Unit of the Graves Registration Commission, set up within the Army in 1915 to bring order to the recording and burial of the fallen. The nails for a fifth tag, carrying the date of death, are visible - and earlier images appear to show that the tag itself was present. A letter alongside from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission states that these would have been the original grave markers, brought home possibly by relatives.
