Memorial Details

Type of Memorial: Serviceman / Servicewoman
WMR Reference Number: 3472
Description: Square base surmounted by rough hewn plinth and obelisk. On the front face of the memorial stands a figure of a helmeted soldier resting on arms reversed. Dedicatory inscription is placed below his feet and names of the dead are inscribed on the sides of the plinth. Stone posts and chain links surround the whole memorial which in turn stands on a large stepped base which forms a traffic island.
Inscription: THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED IN GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF THOSE MEN OF MARCH WHO, / AT THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY, / LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM/ THEY MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE / THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM. / LET THOSE THAT COME AFTER SEE TO / IT THAT THEY ARE NOT FORGOTTEN

Maintenance History: 05 November 2009: Two new tablets were added to the original memorial to include 19 WW1 men that had been omitted. The work was carried out by Fairhaven and Woods Ltd at a cost of £1,457.
