The 4 inset dark wood panels are each inscribed with 2 columns of names and military service details of those who enlisted in the armed forces. The inscription is in gold-painted lettering. [N.B. 1) Of the original memorial, only the 1st and 2nd names panels still exist; the 3rd and 4th names panels and the frame are 'lost'. (See 'condition section' for further details). 2) The spelling of some surnames differed from official records, e.g. the man listed on this memorial as Private 'B. Maintenance History
1994: The Western Synagogue merged with the 'Hull Old Hebrew Congregation' and the 'Hull Judeans Maccabi Association', and relocated to the new synagogue at 30 Pryme Street, Anlaby, Hull HU10 6SH, which opened in April 1995. [The subsequent attempt to relocate this WW1 Roll of Honour board to that premises was only partially successful, i.e. the 1st and 2nd panels of the names section were moved, suffering only minor damage. However, the 3rd and 4th panels of the names section, and the frame bearing the dedicatory inscription, were both 'lost'].// 24/1/1989: The Synagogue in Linnaeus Street was Grade II Listed (List Entry Number 1283079).// 22/4/1917: The WW1 Roll of Honour board (measuring approximately 8 feet wide, by 3 feet high) was unveiled in Hull Western Synagogue, Linnaeus Street. (Some annotations were later added to it, re those who died by the end of WW1).

    • Hull Daily Mail - Friday 05 November 1915 (page 3) printed the following letter: 'JEWISH ROLL OF HONOUR. TO THE EDITOR Of THE "DAILY MAIL." Sir, - Through the medium of the Mail I beg to inform the Hull Jewish community that I am engaged in preparing a roll of honour of all Hull Jews in His Majesty's forces. I find that many have enlisted, and unless parents help me and send full particulars as to name, rank, and regiment of their sons, this roll of honour will be faulty and the names of many omitted. I also desire all recent Hull Jewish recruits to endeavour to see before they leave the town, so that I can provide them with a copy of the authorised Jewish soldier's prayer-book, and also try and keep in touch with them. l am, Sir, etc., SAMUEL GROSS (Jewish Minister). Western Synagogue, Linnaeus-street, November 4th, 1915'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0000324/19151105/038/0003
    • Hull Daily News - Monday 23 April 1917 (page 3) reported: 'THE GOOD FIGHT. HULL JEWS' TRIBUTE TO SOLDIER BRETHREN. A Roll of Honour on which is inscribed the names of over 100 members of the Hull Hebrew Western congregation was unveiled by Mrs Louis Levi at the Linnaeus-street Synagogue yesterday afternoon. The Boy Scouts associated with the Western Congregation lined the approaches. The Roll of Honour was covered with the Union Jack. The Rev S Gross, the pastor, in opening the proceedings, said they were witnessing a roll containing over a hundred names out of a total membership of about 180. It was in all senses of the words an occasion of pride; not of joyful pride because they could not feel joyful when they considered the lengthening list of those who would never return. Their pride was in the fact that so many had gone forth to fight the good battle because the call of duty bade them go. Mr B S Jacobs, in asking Mrs Levi to unveil the roll of honour, expressed the gratitude of the congregation to Mr and Mrs Levi for presenting the same. Mrs Levi said: "I unveil this roll of honour to the glory of our men who have answered their country's call." Many of the young men serving the country have won distinction on the battle field, one of the number being Private Shapero, at home wounded. He was awarded the Military Medal for saving a corporal under heavy fire. Others have rendered equally valorous service'. https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/viewer/bl/0003873/19170423/003/0003
