Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF/ MAJOR WILLIAM LOGAN RUTHVEN/ 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT/ YOUNGER SON OF/ JAMES RUTHVEN, OF THIS CITY/ WHO WAS KILLED IN ACTION/ ON SUNDAY DECEMBER 2ND. 1917/ AT LA VACQUERIE, CAMBRAI, FRANCE,/ WHEN IN COMMAND OF THE/ 2/6TH GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT./ HE FELL WHILE RALLYING HIS MEN/ AFTER AN OVERWHELMING ASSAULT./ HE JOINED THE/ 10TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT/ IN AUGUST 1914./ ASSISTING IN ITS FORMATION AND WITH IT/ WAS HEAVILY ENGAGED AT THE/ BATTLE OF THE SOMME./ HE ALSO SAW SERVICE IN EGYPT./ A GALLANT SOLDIER/ AND A MOST ABLE OFFICER/ BRAVE, STRONG AND TRUE IN LIFE/ HE DIED GLORIOUSLY.
