Type of Memorial: Cenotaph
WMR Reference Number: 37819
Description: Two-stage tapering rectangular sectioned column constructed from Weldon stone, with wreath carved in relief at top, below which is an incised inscription. Incised slate tablets yield names on front and side faces infilled in gold coloured paint. Whole memorial stands on a Portland stone base in raised area accessed by three, wide steps curving outwards, low curved wall to rear & scroll detail next to end pillars. Further incised inscription on front face of base. Located within memorial park.
Inscription: 6 o'clock upper face, cenotaph : OUR / GLORIOUS DEAD 6 o'clock face, tablet : 1914 - 1919 / (46 NAMES) 6 o'clock lower face, cenotaph : IN HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF SILEBY / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR KING & COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919 3 o'clock face, upper tablet : 1914 -1919 / (22 NAMES) 9 o'clock face, upper tablet : 1914 -1919 / (19 NAMES) 9 o'clock face, lower tablet : 1939 -1945 / (20 NAMES) 3 o'clock face, lower tablet : 1939 -1945 / (13 NAMES)
