    Restored lychgate with dedicatory metal plaque placed on one side and plaque detailing the restoration work that was done placed on the reverse.
    Inscription
    PLAQUE ONE: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN PROUD MEMORY OF HEDLEY AND/ STANLEY THORNTON WHO GAVE THEIR/ LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE/ THE GREAT WAR, THIS ANCIENT LYCH GATE/ WAS RESTORED BY THEIR FATHER, A.D. 1924. PLAQUE TWO: THIS LYCH AGTE, PROBABLY THE OLDEST REMEMAINING/ IN ENGLAND, WAS ERECTED IN THE 13TH CENTURY/ AND REPAIRED IN AUGUST 1924, WHEN THE MAIN FRAME/ WORK WAS LEFT UNTOUCHED, BUT THE DECAYED/ GROUND CILLS AND THE BOTTOMS OF THE SIDE POSTS/ WERE RENEWED ON THE NEW FOUNDATIONS AND THE SPURS TO THE BRACKETS, WHICH HAD LONG BEEN/ ABSENT, WERE RESTORED.

    • East Kent Gazette - Saturday 20 December 1924 Beckenham's 13th century lych gate, in Bromley-road, claimed to be the oldest in England, is being restored by a local resident as a memorial to his sons who were killed in the war.
